How it All Started
The history of Avenel-Iselin Medical Group (AIMG) goes all the way back to 1956 when Dr. Joel Mayer established his new general practice in the central New Jersey town of Avenel, NJ. Dr. Mayer settled with his family into the community, devoting the next 19 years to growing his successful solo practice that served the residents of Woodbridge Township and the surrounding communities.
Meanwhile, in the early 1960s, a colleague of Dr. Mayer’s, named Dr. Robert Maurer, started his solo medical practice in nearby Iselin, NJ–and also grew it successfully.

A Merge of Two Great Practices
In 1975, the two physicians decided to build upon two good things, merging their two New Jersey-based medical practices together. It was then that Avenel-Iselin Medical Group was born.
For the next decade, AIMG thrived as one of the first medical group practices in the Woodbridge area, as well as being one of the first medical practices to offer in-office visits seven days a week.
Dr. Maurer followed his calling and decided to pursue a career in academic medicine, allowing him to bestow future physicians with the medical knowledge he acquired in his over 20 years of practice.
AIMG: A Family Tradition
The medical field would prove to be a passion that ran in the Mayer family, as Dr. Joel Mayer’s first son Marc joined AIMG in 1985 after completing his training in Family Medicine. A few years later, Dr. Marc’s brother Mitch also finished his residency in Family Medicine and began his career at AIMG.
In the 1990s, AIMG grew by adding new physicians and physician assistants to the New Jersey-based primary care practice.
In 1995, AIMG expanded to add a physician named Dr. Neil Perilstein to the medical group, practicing alongside the three Mayer family doctors.
Then in 1997, with 41 years of dedicated service to the community, Dr. Joel Mayer retired from AIMG. Dr. Neil Perilstein became a medical partner, strengthening the medical group’s vision and leadership. This brought AIMG to the next growth phase of its development, which was to grow the practice into a multi-specialty group.

Expanding Our Services
In 2001, Gastroenterologist Dr. Mayank Patel was the first specialist to join AIMG, and he continues to provide excellent gastroenterology services to the medical practice. Over the years, the practice has grown to include additional specialty services, and in doing so, has expanded the network to diversify and enrich the quality of care.
In 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic created many obstacles within the healthcare system, including AIMG. Solid leadership, integrated administrative support, and technology helped AIMG thrive when other practices could not keep up with the unprecedented demands. One such example was the implementation of telehealth appointments, which allowed patients safe access to patient care during the times of quarantine and modified public access during the pandemic. Telehealth continues to be a valuable benefit to many, due to the fluctuations of the pandemic as well as busy lifestyles.
